Chapter One      "Pain, hunger, and desperation," the deep hum pushed its way from the back of my throat and into the frigid air. Mist curled out my mouth and into my nose like white smoke. "It is those words, those well-known but esoteric situations that shatter the void of ignorance. It was void protected by the luck of the birthplace and by the arrogance of a society as a whole. It all now curses me after living in that fragile glass void for so long. Here I truly starve. It is here that I suffer from more discomfort than from a slightly unfilled stomach, or the pain from a broken finger bone."      I paused to take in my surroundings.
